Hoiana Resort & Golf in Vietnam plans a large-scale expansion with a US$1 billion price tag.

Nguyen Vinh Tran, general director of Hoi An South Development Ltd, detailed the project for authorities and the business community on 8 January. Phase 2 will include “a multifunctional international convention centre with a capacity of up to 2,500 guests” and “more than 1,000 five-star hotel rooms”, he said.

The expansion will also add a family-friendly retail and entertainment complex and a second golf course “with a professional golf training centre and academy offering international certifications”.

Hoiana, named “Asia’s leading fully integrated resort” at the 2024 World Travel Awards, is located on Vietnam’s central coast in Danang, formerly Quang Nam Province. Phase 1, representing an investment of $1.2 billion, broke ground in 2016 with a plan to open in 2020. When Covid-19 hit, the company tightened its belt, laid off two-thirds of the workforce and stayed open. It finally marked its grand opening in 2021, with four five-star hotels, 20 restaurants and a Robert Trent Jones golf course. The casino offers 140 gaming tables and more than 270 electronic gaming machines.

Growing Danang tourism

Hoiana developers plan a total investment of $4 billion over seven phases, targeted for completion in 2029. Last February, newly appointed CEO Alan Teo, former COO of Philippines resort NUSTAR, indicated Phase 2 would break ground in 2025. No start date has yet been disclosed.

According to The Investor, Hoiana aspires to be a centrepiece of tourism in Danang. An estimated 17 million people visited the area in 2025 including 7.6 million international tourists, a year-on-year increase of 25%. That built on momentum that began in 2024, when tourism grew 32% compared to 2023 and reached 135% of the 2019 level.

Along with pristine beaches, regional attractions include the Marble Mountains, the Son Tra Peninsula, Buddhist temples, the famous Golden Bridge and Dragon Bridge and Hoi An Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All are located about an hour’s drive from Danang International Airport.

Hoiana currently employs 2,700 workers, 98% of them Vietnamese. The expansion will create about 2,000 new jobs, according to Nyugen. The resort is also expected to “contribute more than VND2 trillion [$76.1 million] in tax revenue annually”, about double the 2025 contribution, he said.
