PointsBet Canada has opened pre-registration for its sports betting and online casino platform in Alberta, positioning the company for entry into what is set to become Canada’s second open and competitive regulated iGaming market after Ontario.
PointsBet has commenced the provincial registration process and received approval to market and pre-register Alberta residents while final regulatory steps continue. Eligible Alberta users can now sign up on PointsBet’s website to receive launch notifications and a welcome offer, ahead of a full rollout expected in the coming months.
The move follows a streamlined process overseen by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC), as the province prepares to open its wagering market to multiple private operators.
“Alberta’s move toward an open, competitive iGaming framework is a positive step for Canadian players, offering more choice and consumer protections in a safe and regulated environment,” Scott Vanderwel, chief executive of PointsBet Canada, said.
“We’re excited to introduce our innovative, Canadian-focused sports betting and online casino products to Alberta residents, supported by industry-leading speed, responsible gaming tools, and local expertise,” he added.
PointsBet Canada said its expansion will be supported by its in-house technology and a local operating model. “PointsBet Canada remains dedicated to delivering a fast, reliable, and entertaining experience, powered by its proprietary technology platform,” the operator said. “The company is proud to have built an authentically Canadian sportsbook, supported by Canadian employees and designed specifically to address the needs of the Canadian market.”
Alberta will become PointsBet’s second operating province in Canada. The company currently offers sports betting, horse racing, and online casino games in Ontario, where it has reported strong growth since the market opened in 2022.
At present, Alberta allows regulated online wagering only through the government-run Play Alberta platform, though that monopoly is expected to end as early as 2026. The province passed iGaming legislation in May 2025 aimed at curbing unregulated betting and creating an Ontario-style competitive market.
PointsBet said revenue in Ontario rose 26% in fiscal 2025, helping the company overcome a C$15.1 million ($11.2 million) EBITDA loss, supported by low licensing fees and a favourable tax structure.
