The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has expanded its “Don’t Regret the Bet” advertising program to include high school sports booster clubs statewide starting this year.

The program will allow eligible booster organizations to receive up to $4,000 in funding for promoting responsible gaming messages at school sporting events and through digital platforms.

MGCB officials said the initiative aims to raise awareness about gambling risks among young people while providing financial support for school athletic programs.

Responsible gaming education isn’t just good practice — it’s critical for protecting Michigan’s youth in an era where betting content is everywhere,” said Henry Williams, MGCB Executive Director. “Booster clubs are deeply trusted in their communities, making them ideal partners to reinforce positive behaviors while generating funds for their programs.”

A recent University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital study found that one in six parents of teens worry their child may be developing a gambling problem, highlighting the need for increased education and prevention efforts.

Under the program, participating booster organizations can receive up to $4,000 in financial support by promoting MGCB-approved responsible gaming messages. Advertising activities may include digital and social media campaigns featuring the “Don’t Regret the Bet” messaging, placements in event programs and scoreboards, and distribution of branded posters and graphics during school sporting events.

To qualify, organizations must be school-affiliated 501(c)(3) booster clubs, agree to display responsible gaming messages, and submit a short application with basic reporting.

The expansion comes as research continues to show that young people frequently encounter sports betting advertisements. Studies indicate many youth recall multiple betting ads each week, particularly through social media, digital platforms, and televised sports, often with limited exposure to responsible gambling messages.

Applications are now open and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Interested booster clubs can apply by emailing [email protected].
