Northern Edge Navajo Casino marks its 14th anniversary as a milestone of growth, community investment, and cultural pride. Since opening in 2012, the casino has grown into a key economic driver in northern New Mexico, creating employment opportunities, supporting local infrastructure, and contributing to the long-term prosperity of the Upper Fruitland community and the Navajo Nation.

In an exclusive interview with Yogonet, Navajo Gaming CEO John James reflects on how the casino has evolved—from expanding gaming and entertainment options to introducing culturally inspired experiences like Navajo Ten tournaments.

He highlights how these developments have strengthened the connection with guests and the community, making Northern Edge a place where people feel welcomed, engaged, and valued.

What makes this 14th anniversary such a meaningful milestone for Northern Edge Navajo Casino and Navajo Gaming, and how are you marking the occasion beyond promotional events?

Reaching 14 years is meaningful because Northern Edge represents more than a successful gaming operation. It represents opportunity, stability, and long-term investment in the Diné people and the Upper Fruitland community.

From day one, our mission has been to improve the quality of life for the Navajo People through jobs, infrastructure, and economic development, and this anniversary is a moment to reflect on that broader impact.

Beyond promotional events, we’re using this milestone to recognize our team members, many of whom have been with us for years, and to highlight the role Northern Edge continues to play in strengthening families, supporting community services, and contributing to the Navajo Nation’s economic future.

How has Northern Edge evolved since opening in 2012? Can you highlight some of the key business and operational milestones from the past 14 years?

Northern Edge has grown significantly since opening in 2012. What began as a single casino has evolved into the premier gaming facility in northern New Mexico, known for strong financial performance, high guest loyalty, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Over the years, we’ve expanded and refined our gaming mix, dining options, and entertainment offerings while maintaining a consistent focus on service and operational excellence. Key milestones include: becoming the first Navajo casino to introduce Navajo Ten tournaments, building out critical infrastructure like power and natural gas access, and establishing a reputation for consistent growth and stability within Navajo Gaming’s portfolio.

What were the early years of Northern Edge like? With nearly 300 employees today—most of them Navajo—what makes the property an attractive and long-term employer in the region?

The early years required resilience and long-term thinking. Like many projects on the Navajo Nation, Northern Edge was built in an area with limited infrastructure, which meant Navajo Gaming had to invest not only in the casino but also in utilities and services that would support the surrounding community.

Today, Northern Edge employs nearly 300 people, the majority of whom are Navajo, and offers market-rate wages, strong benefits, and opportunities for advancement. We have Navajo team members at every level of the organization, including management, and we focus heavily on employee well-being, training, and retention, which is why so many team members choose to build long-term careers here.

How has Northern Edge Navajo Casino contributed to the local economy and surrounding communities over the past 14 years? What role does it play within Navajo Gaming’s broader mission?

Northern Edge plays a vital role in Navajo Gaming’s mission to create jobs, generate revenue, and stimulate economic development. The casino supports hundreds of direct jobs and many more indirectly through vendors, contractors, and service partners.

Infrastructure investments made for the property, such as upgrading the electrical substation and extending a three-mile natural gas line, improved the quality of life not only for the casino but also for nearby housing and the Upper Fruitland Chapter House.

Within the broader Navajo Gaming enterprise, Northern Edge is a strong economic engine that helps fund programs, services, and opportunities across the Navajo Nation.

How has the guest experience changed since opening, particularly in terms of gaming offerings, dining, and entertainment? What shifts in customer demand have you observed?

Guest expectations have evolved, and Northern Edge has evolved with them. While gaming remains central, today’s guests are looking for a complete entertainment experience. We’ve seen growing demand for variety in gaming options, comfortable and social environments, quality dining, and live entertainment that reflects both regional tastes and Navajo culture.

In response, Northern Edge has continued to refresh its gaming floor, enhance dining options like Cedar Bow Restaurant and the Food Court, and regularly feature live bands and entertainers, creating an experience that feels authentic, welcoming, and engaging.

Northern Edge was the first Navajo casino to introduce Navajo Ten tournaments. Can you tell us how culturally driven gaming concepts fit into your overall player-engagement strategy?

Culturally driven gaming concepts are a natural extension of who we are. Navajo Ten tournaments are a great example of how we blend tradition with entertainment in a way that resonates with our guests.

These initiatives help differentiate Northern Edge while reinforcing cultural pride and connection. They also support stronger player engagement by offering experiences that guests can’t find elsewhere, especially those who value games rooted in Navajo tradition and storytelling.

Are there any expansion plans, technology upgrades, or new initiatives on the horizon for Northern Edge?

Our focus moving forward is on thoughtful growth and continuous improvement. That includes evaluating technology upgrades, enhancing guest amenities, and exploring new initiatives that support operational efficiency and sustainability.

Across Navajo Gaming, we’re committed to responsible development, effective energy use, and teaching the next generation of Navajo leaders through workforce development programs. Northern Edge will continue to evolve in ways that align with our mission, serve our guests, and strengthen the communities we’re part of.
