Online sports betting in New York reached a new monthly revenue high in May, generating $248.9 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR), according to figures released by the New York State Gaming Commission. The total surpasses the previous record of $247 million set in January, a 0.8% increase.
Although GGR climbed, the monthly betting handle declined from January’s $2.48 billion to $2.21 billion in May, marking a 10.8% decrease. Year-on-year, however, the handle showed a 12.1% increase compared to the $1.97 billion wagered in May 2024.
The rise in GGR alongside a lower handle suggests a higher operator win rate compared to the same period last year, when May GGR totaled $203.3 million.
The state’s education fund saw direct benefits from the stronger revenue performance. In May, $126.9 million was allocated to education, a 22.4% increase over the amount contributed in May 2024. Since mobile sports wagering was legalized and launched in January 2022, New York has accumulated over $6.5 billion in GGR and more than $3.2 billion in contributions to education.
Platform providers received $122 million from May’s total GGR, up from $94.4 million in April, marking a significant month-on-month jump. The figures were part of the Commission’s fiscal year 2025/2026 report, which tracks sports wagering revenue and its distribution across state funds.
FanDuel and DraftKings continued to lead the market in April, a trend that likely persisted into May, though provider-specific figures for the latest month have not yet been detailed.
The record-setting revenue month comes as state lawmakers weigh additional regulation. A proposal introduced in April seeks to restrict deposit limits and prohibit the use of credit cards for mobile sports betting transactions. The legislation is still under review.
While New York’s online betting market continues to grow in both revenue and tax contributions, regulators remain focused on balancing market performance with responsible gambling practices.
According to the Gaming Commission’s notes, a portion of the education-directed revenue, $6 million annually, is designated for problem gambling education and treatment, with another $5 million earmarked for youth sports and education grant programs. The state is expected to release additional monthly data for the remainder of the fiscal year through March 2026.
