John O’Reilly, a seasoned executive with extensive experience in the British betting and gaming industry, will be appointed as a non-executive director of the UK Tote Group, effective 1 May. The operator of the country’s popular pool betting services announced the news on Monday.

John Williamson, chairman of the UK Tote Group, highlighted the appointment as a critical enhancement to the board’s expertise. “John will provide valuable support to the Tote team, particularly in relation to product development and customer experience,” Williamson said.

Williamson also referenced the recent board addition of Andrew Weir in April, interpreting these changes as part of a broader board refreshment strategy. These areas are strategic priorities as the Tote seeks to grow its pool betting business both domestically and internationally.

Speaking on his upcoming role, O’Reilly said he views it as “a very valuable role” for the Tote in shaping the future of horse racing within the UK and Ireland and globally. Pointing to recent innovations and growth at the company as proof of momentum, he expressed confidence in what lies ahead.

“Through further enhancements to the pool product, alongside developing deepening international partnerships, I believe the Tote has its best days ahead of it,” O’Reilly added.

Decades of industry experience

O’Reilly brings more than 30 years of senior industry experience to the role. He stepped down as the CEO of Rank Group PLC earlier this year, after seven and a half years at the helm of the casino and bingo giant. CFO Richard Harris took over as interim CEO while the company searches for a permanent successor.

Prior to his tenure at Rank Group, he held senior positions at some of the UK’s foremost gambling brands, such as Ladbrokes and William Hill.

Outside the commercial sector, O’Reilly currently chairs Weatherbys, a horseracing organisation. He is also a trustee of the New Bridge Foundation charity.
