The National Bank Open will return to Canada from 1 to 13 August, with the ATP Tour competing at IGA Stadium in Montreal and the WTA Tour taking place at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, as betting operator Tonybet launches betting markets for both tournaments.
First staged in 1881 at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, the National Bank Open is the third-oldest active tennis tournament, behind only Wimbledon and the US Open. It predates both the French Open and the Australian Open and has been held every year except during the two World Wars and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
The inaugural tournament was won by Isidore Hellmuth, who defeated W.H. Young in straight sets. Ivan Lendl holds the men’s record with six titles, whilst Chris Evert and Monica Seles share the women’s Open Era record with four titles each. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams are also among the tournament’s past champions.
Last year’s tournament produced one of the event’s biggest stories when Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko won the women’s title in Montreal. Then 18 years old and ranked outside the world’s top 80, Mboko defeated four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the final to become the first Canadian woman to win the tournament since Bianca Andreescu in 2019. Before Andreescu, the country’s previous women’s champion was Faye Urban in 1969.
Mboko had been expected to defend her title in Toronto this year but will miss the tournament after sustaining a knee injury in London in June. Although ruled out of competition, the world No. 10 is expected to make appearances at Sobeys Stadium during the tournament. Her withdrawal leaves the women’s draw without its defending champion.
Ben Shelton will defend the title he won in Toronto in 2025 against a field that includes Montréal natives Félix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriel Diallo. Canada has not produced a men’s National Bank Open champion since Robert Bédard won the title in 1958.
The tournament expanded in 2025 from a seven-day event to a 12-day format featuring 96-player draws in both cities. The expanded event attracted a record 504,860 spectators, the highest attendance among combined ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournaments that season.
As a Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament, the National Bank Open awards 1,000 ranking points to its singles champions, making it one of the most important events before the US Open.
The men’s and women’s draws will be conducted on 31 July, with the top seeds receiving first-round byes.
Tonybet said it will offer betting markets across both tournaments, including outright winner, match and set betting markets. The operator is also offering new customers a 100% first-deposit bonus of up to C$350 (US$249), subject to five-times wagering requirements.
