The PGA Tour has suspended PGA Tour Champions player Matt Gogel for six months after he placed multiple bets on golf events in 2024 and 2025.
The Tour announced the suspension on Wednesday, saying the wagers violated its integrity program, which prohibits betting on PGA Tour events and other professional golf competitions.
The Tour did not disclose which tournaments Gogel bet on or the nature of the wagers. However, it said none of the bets involved events in which Gogel participated.
Gogel, 55, will be suspended from Tour-sanctioned events for six months and is eligible to return in late February.
“In 2024 and 2025, I unknowingly violated the PGA Tour policy by placing small recreational wagers on golf,” Gogel said in a statement. “I want to be clear that these wagers were not placed on regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events or any tournament in which I participated.”
“I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf,” he added, calling the incident “an honest mistake.”
Gogel won once on the PGA Tour, taking the 2002 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am title. A year earlier, he finished tied for 12th at the US Open, his best result in a major championship.
He has been a regular on the PGA Tour Champions in recent years but has yet to win on the senior circuit. Gogel did not miss a cut during the past season and finished runner-up at the ISPS HANDA Senior Open in July.
