Churchill Downs is exploring options that could include the sale of Oxford Casino, its Route 26 property in Oxford, Maine, according to local media reports.

The Kentucky-based company issued a brief statement saying it was considering “strategic alternatives” for its horse racing and wagering platforms. No additional details were provided, and the company did not give a timeline for the review, reports the Lewiston Sun Journal.

We remain focused on creating long-term value for our shareholders,” said Churchill Downs Senior Director of Communications Breck Thomas-Ross.

Other properties could be sold as part of the strategic review. The move would allow Churchill Downs to invest more capital into the Churchill Downs Racetrack, the Kentucky Derby, horse racing in general, and its TwinSpires wagering platform.

However, the company says there are no guarantees that it will actually sell any of the properties.

Oxford Casino began operations in 2012, two years after Maine voters approved the development in 2010. Churchill Downs completed its acquisition of the casino in the summer of 2013, when the property was reported to be worth about $160 million.

Following the purchase, Churchill Downs announced a $25 million expansion of the property. The expanded casino, which included a new hotel and restaurants, opened in 2017.

The property currently features about 955 slot machines, ranging from a penny per play to $5 per play. There are also 22 tables for table games. The casino website lists four people who won at least $20,000 in July.

Last month, Churchill Downs reported record second-quarter revenue and adjusted EBITDA on the back of another strong Kentucky Derby week and growth at its historical racing machine venues, while separately agreeing to take full ownership of wagering technology provider United Tote.

Second-quarter net revenue rose 5% year over year to a record $980 million, while adjusted EBITDA increased 6% to an all-time high of $477 million. Net income attributable to the company climbed 11% to $241 million.
