Online gaming platform provider PhilWeb Corp has appointed Philippine business leader Lance Y. Gokongwei as chairman of its board, completing a leadership transition as the company moves to expand its artificial intelligence-enabled technology business.

Gokongwei replaces Crisanto Roy B. Alcid, who relinquished his positions as chairman and chief executive effective Aug. 27. Alcid will remain a director of the company.

Gokongwei, who joined PhilWeb’s board in July, will serve as chairman for the remainder of the current term.

The appointment follows his recent ₱2.02 billion ($32.6 million) strategic equity investment in the company and completes PhilWeb’s institutional governance restructuring, the company said.

PhilWeb said the transition marked a shift from cross-border capital formation toward the large-scale execution of its commercial business-to-business AI-enabled technology roadmap.

“This transition marks a critical inflection point for our capitalization and operational scale,” Gokongwei said. “Our objective is clear: to deploy institutional-grade, AI-powered infrastructure that establishes a new operational standard for security and compliance across the regulated digital ecosystem.”

The company is accelerating the deployment of an enterprise artificial intelligence layer as it seeks to position itself as an institutional-grade digital infrastructure provider.

Its immediate priorities include real-time operational monitoring, algorithmic risk management, regulatory compliance automation, anti-fraud detection and data-driven customer lifecycle optimisation.

PhilWeb president Brian Ng said Gokongwei’s appointment would provide the governance needed for the company’s next phase of expansion.

His strategic oversight ensures that our AI infrastructure rollout—specifically engineered to serve the complex backend needs of premium commercial tourism complexes and multinational platform providers—is executed with absolute capital market discipline,” he added.

PhilWeb has been transitioning into a technology-based platform provider and has signed agreements supporting the online gaming operations of Hann Casino Resort, Okada Manila, NUSTAR and Newport World Resorts.

The company has also entered into a strategic service agreement with FBM Philippines to support its network of gaming machines and venues.

Gokongwei is president, chief executive and executive director of JG Summit Holdings. The Philippine conglomerate’s businesses include food and beverage company Universal Robina Corporation, property developer Robinsons Land Corporation and airline operator Cebu Air.

Its leisure arm, Universal Hotels and Resorts Inc., includes NUSTAR Resort Cebu among its core assets.
