On Thursday, Entain plc, the London-listed sports betting and gaming group, announced the appointment of Sheila Bangalore as an independent non-executive director with immediate effect. Bangalore brings over two decades of experience spanning the gaming, hospitality and technology sectors.
Her executive career has included senior roles at major gaming groups Bally Technologies and Aristocrat. She also currently serves on the board of Alliance Entertainment Holding Corporation (Nasdaq: AENT) and has held past board positions with US supplier Games Global Limited.
Entain highlighted Bangalore’s “deep expertise in multi-jurisdictional regulation, capital markets and governance” and noted her “established network across the gaming ecosystem” as significant assets.
Pierre Bouchut, chair of Entain, welcomed the appointment, stating: “On behalf of the board, I am delighted to welcome Sheila to Entain.
“Sheila has a strong track record of executive and non-executive experience across multiple sectors, particularly in the gaming industry. I am confident that the board will benefit from Sheila’s judgment, rigour and breadth of expertise as Entain continues to execute its strategy.”
Entain’s board underwent a reshuffle last year when short-term CEO Gavin Isaacs left the company in February.
At the time non-executive chair, and previous interim CEO, Stella David, resumed the role and was later made a permanent replacement for Isaacs.
Entain’s current climate
Bangalore’s appointment follows heightened regulatory scrutiny in Australia as Entain’s Australian business entered into an 18-month court-enforceable undertaking with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) earlier this month. This followed an investigation that found more than 500 breaches linked to Australia’s BetStop self-exclusion system.
The regulator found that Entain had opened accounts for self-excluded customers, failed to promptly close certain accounts and sent promotional communications that lacked mandatory BetStop messaging.
In response, Entain introduced compliance system upgrades, including a “single customer view” designed to consolidate customer accounts across brands.
Meanwhile in the UK, Entain has recently advocated for tighter controls on unlicensed gambling activity in the UK’s football sector. In May, the company called on the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) to prevent English football clubs from accepting sponsorships from gambling operators that are not licensed in the UK.
Entain argued that clubs partnering with offshore or unlicensed betting firms risked exposing consumers to operators outside UK regulatory oversight.
Entain CEO Stella David urged the IFR to act before the 2026-27 season gets under way in August.
The parent company also recently closed over a third of its Ladbrokes stores in Ireland.
