wo new sportsbooks have opened Wednesday in both Lake Charles riverboat casinos in Louisiana after the Gaming Control Board issued licenses to Penn National’s L’Auberge Casino Resort and Golden Nugget Lake Charles.
L’Auberge sportsbook opened Wednesday 9 a.m, while DraftKings sportsbook in the Golden Nugget opened at 2 p.m. Ronnie Johns, Louisiana Gaming Control Board chairman, said Monday that the sports betting licenses will last for six months, and permanent licenses should be issued by mid-2022.
L’Auberge and Golden Nugget are currently constructing permanent sports betting locations: The L’Auberge sportsbook is at the former site of the poker room and Stadium Games; it will be replaced by a Barstool Sportsbook in early 2022.
The DraftKings facility is inside the Blue Martini bar at Golden Nugget; a 10,000-square foot sportsbook with nearly 300 seats is expected to open in the summer.

So far, six state-licensed casinos have been greenlit to start taking sports bets. Last week, wagering started at Harrah’s in New Orleans, Boomtown Casino in Harvey, L’Auberge Baton Rouge and Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City. These properties were the first ones the Louisiana State Police’s Gaming Division completed their compliance reviews of. Seven other state-licensed riverboats and racinos have applied to take bets on sports.
Even though the licensing process for in-person sports betting seems to be moving forward, online sports betting in the state is a different issue. With every prospect of launching by the end of this month now shaking, Johns aims for a 2022 launch as soon as January 1st. Sports betting in the state was planned to kick off in the state in state-licensed casinos first, as they have already been investigated. Vendors for betting websites and apps need a full review that required more time.
