Las Vegas witnessed a preview of the capabilities of the MSG Sphere, billed as the “world’s largest spherical structure”, during its Fourth of July lights display. On Tuesday, the entertainment venue’s exterior, called the Exosphere, featured dynamic, animated content that transformed the gambling mecca’s skyline.

The MSG Sphere, measuring 366 feet tall and 516 feet wide, boasts the “largest programmable LED screen globally,” and is scheduled to officially open September 29 as an entertainment venue with a series of 25 concerts featuring U2. However, the early debut Independence Day show of its exterior screen has already left spectators in awe. 

The Exosphere showcased a range of artistic and branded content that delighted guests at the Sphere and the millions of visitors to Las Vegas each year. During the Fourth of July show, the Exosphere’s colossal LED screen, spanning 580,000 square feet, was fully illuminated for the first time ever.

The display commenced with a welcoming message, “Hello World,” followed by a  presentation of fireworks and stars-and-stripes animations. The visuals then transitioned through various scenes, including underwater environments and textured lunar surfaces, demonstrating the versatility of the Exosphere.

Guy Barnett, SVP of Brand Strategy and Creative Development, described the capabilities of the Exosphere: “The Exosphere is more than a screen or a billboard—it is living architecture, and unlike anything that exists anywhere in the world.”

Last night’s show provided a glimpse of the Exosphere’s captivating power, and the possibilities for artists, partners, and brands to create compelling and impactful stories to connect with audiences in new ways.”

David Hopkinson, President and Chief Operating Officer of MSG Sports, emphasized the immense potential of the Exosphere for brands: “There’s nothing comparable to the impact from displaying innovative brand and immersive content on the world’s largest video screen.”

Sphere’s Exosphere is a 360-degree canvas for brand storytelling that will be seen around the world, offering our partners an unparalleled opportunity to become part of the greatest show on Earth. The extraordinary experiences we can create are only limited by imagination.”

The Exosphere comprises approximately 1.2 million LED pucks, each containing 48 LED diodes capable of displaying 256 million different colors. This landmark on the Las Vegas skyline will continue to host creative activations during major events in the city, with additional content planned for the coming months.

As the MSG Sphere officially opens on September 29, it will feature renowned performances such as U2’s UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere series of shows, and Postcard from Earth, directed by renowned filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, in October.

The Exosphere will also play its own role during the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix in November, captivating audiences both on-site and through global televised coverage with race-related content, activations and advertising.

However, going forward, the Exosphere is expected to eventually display a wide range of artistic and branded content daily, “from rituals such as sunrise and sunset, to impactful brand campaigns, to delightful moments running at set times,” according to a statement.

The Exosphere’s development was a collaborative effort involving experts in creative production, technology, and software. Sphere Studios, in partnership with SACO Technologies and 7thSense, delivered the Exosphere’s cutting-edge LED display, advanced media server capabilities, and mesmerizing content.
