Sports betting app WynnBet has informed its customers in Massachusetts about the immediate closure of its mobile sports betting operations in the state.
In an email sent on Monday, users were notified that their accounts would remain accessible for the next 30 days, allowing time for the settlement of outstanding bets and withdrawal of account balances, WCVB reported.
WynnBET assured users that representatives would reach out to those with futures bets or parlay legs unsettled within the given timeframe.
The decision to close down was formally presented to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission earlier this month, and as of Monday, users discovered that the app no longer accepted new wagers.
“This will have no impact on the WynnBET Sportsbook at Encore Boston Harbor, nor will there be interruption or change in sportsbook operations,” Seth Medvin, Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications at WynnBET, was quoted as saying in the article.
WynnBET accounted for under 4% of the total wagers placed by bettors in Massachusetts, significantly trailing behind industry leaders DraftKings and FanDuel, which commanded nearly 50% and 30%, respectively.
Additionally, the email to customers conveyed that Wynn Rewards points would remain redeemable at Wynn Las Vegas, Encore at Wynn Las Vegas, and Encore Boston Harbor properties.
WynnBet and Betr had announced early this year that they would cease online sports betting operations in Massachusetts. The WynnBet mobile sportsbook has already shut down its online wagering operations in seven other states. In August, Wynn said it thought there were “higher and better uses of capital deployment” than “the continued requirement for outsized marketing spend through user acquisition and promotions in online sports betting.”
WynnBet reported a handle of $12.45 million for December, less than every other online operator except Betr (less than $500,000) and accounting for less than 2% of the statewide total.
