The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has released its casino gambling and sports betting revenue report for January. Total taxable revenue for the month from both activities was $164.67 million, indicating a slight increase from December’s $163.6 million.

The combined gross gaming revenue (GGR) from the state’s three casinos – Plainridge Park CasinoMGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor – for the month was approximately $93.54 million. The figure represented a slight decrease from December, when the casinos generated $103.03 million. Casino business tends to be seasonal with January typically a slow month.

Encore Boston led the way with $60.9 million in revenue from slots and table games, followed by MGM Springfield, which generated $20.7 million; and slots-only Plainridge Park, which made a total of $11.8 million. 

Sports betting in January

Massachusetts generated approximately $71.13 million in taxable sports wagering revenue across its eight mobile and online sports betting licensees and its three in-person licensees in January. Massachusetts players in the state collectively wagered $651.7 million during the period, a decrease from December’s handle of $658.7 million. Online sports betting was not available a year ago.

Online betting contributed the lion’s share to the overall sports betting revenue, with $69.9 million coming from mobile platforms and a modest $1.2 million from retail sportsbooks.

Among individual operators, DraftKings emerged as the leader in the online betting market. In January, the operator reported $36.1 million in revenue from $311.4 million in online bets.

FanDuel, owned by Flutter Entertainment, secured the second position with $25.1 million in revenue from a handle of $194.03 millionBetMGM lagged behind in third place, generating $3.8 million in revenue from $36.8 million in total online wagers.
