Local maritime tourism program Macau Cruise is set to welcome a new ferry company in 2024, as well as committing to strengthen ties with casino operators. According to the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the new company will bring with it new fireworks sightseeing routes.
In a written reply to legislator Ella Lei Ching’s inquiry on marine tourism, MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said that Macau Cruise had conducted over 600 sailings in 2023 since resuming operations in August last year, accommodating more than 5,000 passengers. However, according to Macau Business, the director has not revealed yet specific details regarding the new entry to the program.
The Macau Cruise, operated by Shun Tak-China Travel Ship Management (Macau), connects the Barra Pier and the Coloane Pier and offers a 25-minute journey that provides passengers with scenic views of the Macau peninsula, islands off Taipa and Coloane. Apart from sightseeing, the vessel can be used for several water activities, like watching fireworks displays, study tours, and ecological visits.
Replying to the legislator’s inquiry, the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) said that they were committed to fostering collaboration between ferry companies and local gaming operators, with the aim of incorporating local elements into maritime tourism projects.
Earlier this week, SJM Resorts announced that it has teamed up with Shun Tak – China Travel to launch the ‘SJM x Macau Cruise’ on 2nd March, which would offer what the company calls “a unique sea + land” touring experience.
In late 2023, the MGM Macau Sightseeing Cruise was launched as a joint effort from MGM and local agency CHIII Design. The cabin design of the cruise is inspired by the heritage site A-Ma Temple, along with iconic landmarks and maritime elements.
