Alberta’s regulated online gambling market is set to open on July 13 with 28 approved operators now listed by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission (AGLC), including several of the largest sportsbook and online casino brands active across North America.
The newly released Gaming Registrations document identifies operators that have either completed or begun the province’s licensing process. The list includes high-profile names such as FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars Sportsbook, BallyBet, PointsBet Canada, and theScore Bet, alongside government-run platform PlayAlberta.
The province is preparing to become Canada’s second regulated iGaming jurisdiction after Ontario launched its market in April 2022.
Operators prepare multi-brand offerings
Several operators plan to introduce multiple brands in Alberta. Caesars will launch Caesars Sportsbook, Caesars Palace Online, and Horseshoe Online Casino, while Bally’s Canada is preparing BallyBet Sportsbook and Casino, together with Monopoly Casino and Sportsbook. DraftKings is preparing to offer DraftKings Sportsbook and Casino together with Golden Nugget Online Gaming.
FanDuel, owned by Flutter Entertainment, is expected to provide online casino gaming, sports betting, and poker through its PokerStars on FanDuel platform after consolidating PokerStars operations in North America.
BetMGM, the joint venture between MGM Resorts International and Entain, is also preparing to offer casino, sports betting, and poker products in the province. In Ontario, BetMGM’s poker offering and PartyPoker operate as separate brands while sharing player liquidity, and a similar structure may be introduced in Alberta.
Super Group brands listed for Alberta include Betway, JackpotCity, Spin Casino, Royal Vegas, Ruby Fortune, and Grizzly’s Quest. Other operators on AGLC’s list include Sports Interaction, BET99, Betty Gaming, CasinoTime, BetNova, Lucky Days, and Pala Interactive Canada.
Canadian companies enter home market
Canadian-owned companies entering the market include BET99, Betty Gaming, CasinoTime, PlayAlberta, Pure Casino Entertainment, and River Cree iGaming, which operates land-based casino properties in Alberta.
AGLC’s current list does not include operators such as bet365, Soft2Bet, TonyBet, GGPoker, 888, NorthStar Gaming, or PowerPlay, despite prior indications that some intended to enter Alberta’s market.
Regulators have indicated that additional operators may join after the market opens.
Suppliers receive approval ahead of launch
Alongside operators, AGLC has also approved 22 Critical Gaming Service Providers. The supplier list includes gaming technology companies such as IGT and Light & Wonder, which support sportsbook and casino operations through platform and content services.
Provincial officials have been working toward a regulatory structure modeled in part on Ontario’s framework, which currently hosts more than 30 licensed sportsbook and online casino brands.
The Alberta government estimates the regulated market could generate approximately CAD $100 million in annual tax revenue while shifting gambling activity from gray-market operators into the legal system.
Summer sports calendar aligns with launch
Several operators, including BetRivers, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, and theScore Bet, have already started pre-registration activity ahead of launch day.
The opening date also coincides with a busy sports schedule. Alberta’s regulated market will go live during the final stretch of the World Cup, with the championship match scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium.
The launch will also take place before Week 7 of the Canadian Football League season, including the Calgary Stampeders’ July 18 game against the Montreal Alouettes.
Advertising policy changes draw attention
Google’s revised gambling advertising policy could also increase competition. Under updated rules announced earlier this week, licensed gambling operators are now permitted to run Google advertisements in Alberta.
The expansion of regulated online gambling has also drawn criticism from some groups. First Nations casino operators have previously raised concerns that online gaming growth could reduce revenue at community casinos that support local programs and services.
Critics have also said Alberta will need to balance revenue generation with responsible gambling measures as online betting access expands across Canada.
