California’s Black Oak Casino Resort is celebrating its 25th anniversary after growing from a small casino into a destination resort with gaming, lodging, dining, and family entertainment facilities.
The property, operated by the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians, opened on May 15, 2001, in Tuolumne County in a metal building that housed a few hundred slot machines. Over the last 25 years, the site has added gaming, hospitality, recreation, and retail offerings across the resort campus near Tuolumne City and Sonora.
Property additions over two decades
One of the earliest major expansion projects took place in 2005 with the addition of more than 50,000 sq. ft. of gaming space. The updated gaming floor included 1,100 slot machines, 22 table games, a high-limit gaming area, bars, restaurants and a non-smoking gaming section.
The same development also introduced Seven Sisters, a third-floor dining venue overlooking the property, along with a 24-lane bowling alley, sports bar, and restaurant. In later years, the bowling alley underwent renovations, the arcade increased in size, and a supervised play center for children operated by Kids Quest was added.
A six-story parking garage opened in 2009. Another addition arrived in 2011 with the opening of the Bear Creek convenience store and gas station. The facility includes a 24-hour touchless car wash, beer and wine, snacks, drinks, and made-to-order burritos and tacos.
In 2025, Bear Creek underwent a 1,600 sq. ft. renovation that added groceries, meats, and produce intended for travelers and local residents.
“We truly want to offer something for people of all ages and interests, and when you look at all the offerings we have here on site, I think it’s safe to say we accomplished that,” said Ty Day Jr., Board Chairman of the Tuolumne Economic Development Authority Board of Directors. “Our team has come together and worked incredibly hard over the past 25 years to make Black Oak the singular destination for family fun in Northern California.”

Hotel and recreation offerings
The resort entered the lodging segment in 2013 with the opening of The Hotel, a six-story facility featuring 148 suites, a coffee shop, fitness center, heated pool, and hot tub.
In May 2025, the hotel property underwent renovations and additional construction that included 48 suites connected to the gaming floor. The original 148 rooms were redesigned during the project.
The pool area was also redone with a larger hot tub and an outdoor television screen for sports viewing. The resort also introduced a splash zone featuring water slides, fountains and a water dump bucket for children.
For outdoor travelers, the resort added an RV park in 2018 with nearly 100 RV sites. Amenities include a clubhouse, heated pool and spa, basketball court, pickleball courts, and a catch-and-release fishing pond.
Golf and sports attractions
In 2019, the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians acquired Sonora’s only 18-hole golf course, Mountain Springs. Following renovations, the course reopened under the name Teleli.
The golf property includes a pro shop, driving range, bar and restaurant. The resort also offers stay-and-play packages connected to hotel accommodations.
“As someone who has been involved with Black Oak since day one, it’s truly amazing to take a step back and take in all we’ve added and done over the past 25 years,” said Kevin Day, Chairman of the Tuolumne Me-Wuk Tribal Council. “Black Oak Casino Resort provides meaningful employment to hundreds of residents, offers families an unforgettable getaway experience, and has grown into a true cornerstone of Tuolumne County and the surrounding region.”
Another family-oriented venue opened in December 2023 with the launch of Elevate, an indoor sports center featuring trampoline attractions, batting cages, sports simulators, dodgeball courts and a junior ninja warrior course.
“With every project and expansion, the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians has had a singular goal in mind – to make Black Oak Casino Resort the premier destination for families looking to create lifelong memories together,” the resort said.
Anniversary activities planned in May
“To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Black Oak Casino Resort, there will be a wide variety of events and promotions taking place throughout the month of May,” the resort announced.
The anniversary celebration includes a fireworks show, cash giveaways, live music, and food specials scheduled throughout May.
“The weekend of our 25th anniversary is going to be incredibly fun and exciting, both for our guests and for our team,” said Luis Torres, Director of Marketing for Black Oak Casino Resort. “We’ll have a large free fireworks show, cash giveaways, and plenty of great food specials and live music to celebrate our silver anniversary.”
