Brazil’s federal government is preparing new restrictions on sports betting advertising as part of a broader effort to reduce consumer debt and limit public exposure to gambling-related content.
The announcement was made Monday by Finance Ministry executive secretary Dário Durigan during the presentation of the government’s new “Desenrola Adimplentes” program at the Palácio do Planalto.
According to local reports, the government intends to tighten controls on betting advertisements through administrative measures already available to the Executive branch, while also considering a provisional measure if additional regulatory powers are needed.
Durigan said the administration plans to continue adopting initiatives aimed at reducing the population’s exposure to advertising from betting operators, an issue that has become increasingly debated in Brazil since the launch of the regulated online betting market last year.
While the government has not yet detailed the specific restrictions under consideration, the move signals a tougher stance on gambling promotion as authorities monitor concerns related to consumer debt and excessive betting activity.
The proposed advertising crackdown was announced alongside the launch of Desenrola Adimplentes, a federal program designed to expand access to credit and help financially vulnerable Brazilians renegotiate outstanding debts.
The initiative targets informal workers, private-sector employees, and students linked to Brazil’s Student Financing Fund (Fies). Under the program, participants will be able to access renegotiated loans with interest rates starting at 1.99% per month.
One of the most notable measures tied to the program directly affects betting activity. Individuals who enroll in Desenrola Adimplentes will have their registration blocked across all betting platforms operating in Brazil for six months.
The restriction is intended to prevent consumers from using renegotiated credit to fund gambling activity while supporting their financial recovery process.
