The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) voted unanimously to renew the operating licenses of Detroit’s three commercial casinos at its regularly scheduled public board meeting.
Detroit’s three commercial casinos — MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino — will continue to fund city and state programs through 2027 as a result of the MGCB’s decision.
Under current law, the casinos remit 19% of adjusted gross receipts in wagering taxes. Of that total, 8.1% goes to the state, and 10.9% goes to the City of Detroit, in addition to payments required under development agreements.
Retail sports betting receipts carry a separate 8.4% tax, and operators also pay annual regulatory fees. These combined payments fund city and state programs on an annual basis.
Review process preceded the vote
The renewal followed a review of each operator’s financial standing and operational practices, along with compliance with the responsible gaming provisions contained in the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act.
The vote took place during the Board’s regularly scheduled public meeting and allows the three properties to continue operating under state oversight, with patrons able to rely on continued monitoring of game fairness and operator accountability.
“Year after year, these renewals show that Detroit’s casinos continue to meet the high bar Michigan sets for operating with integrity,” said MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams. “As the industry continues to evolve, our focus remains the same — protecting patrons, supporting responsible gaming, and making sure this remains an industry Michigan can be proud of.”
License reviews and renewals for Michigan’s commercial casinos take place on an annual basis. Detroit’s three casinos are next scheduled for renewal consideration in September 2027.
