ast Friday, Senate President Bill Ferguson (D-Baltimore City) announced two new appointees, Laura Gamble and Rosie Allen-Herring, to the newly created, seven-member, Sports Wagering Application Review Commission(SWARC), which will evaluate companies seeking to enter Maryland’s forthcoming sports betting industry, reports Maryland Matters.

The SWARC was created by the General Assembly earlier this year following voters’ approval of a 2020 referendum to allow sports gambling. The commission will vet applications from firms seeking to operate a bricks-and-mortar betting operation or create a mobile app.

Gamble is the regional president of PNC for Greater Maryland, with more than 30 years of experience in the banking industry. She is also a trustee of the Baltimore Community Foundation and Mercy Health Systems; a board member of the Greater Baltimore Committee, Ready at Five, and the Central Maryland Transportation Alliance; and on the board of visitors for the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Allen-Herring is the chief executive officer of United Way of the National Capital Area, with more than 30 years of experience in the areas of corporate finance, strategic leadership, public and private partnerships, corporate philanthropy, and community investment. Allen-Herring serves on the board of directors for the Greater Washington Board of Trade, MedStar Health, and WesBanco; and on the boards of trustees at A.T. Still University and Prince George’s Community College Foundation.

Ferguson said in a statement: “Integrity, expertise, and diversity are critical to building a sports wagering market that is transparent and representative, Laura Gamble, and Rosie Allen-Herring embody those qualities and bring decades of experience that will facilitate equitable and competitive licensure in Maryland.”

Earlier last week, House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones (D-Baltimore County) named Cassandra Stevenson, senior vice president and head of corporate tax at Raymond James Financial, and Frank Turner, a Howard County Democrat who served six terms in the House of Delegates, to the panel as well.
