The Indiana Gaming Commission has set its sights on a spring 2024 debut for the state’s upcoming casino in Terre Haute, despite lingering legal concerns and the aftermath of recent scandals in the industry.
Deputy Director Jenny Reske indicated that construction progress is aligning with an early April launch for the casino, while the associated hotel might open its doors at a later stage.
“We’ve made sure that we facilitated all of the things they needed to do on the timeline they needed,” Reske said, as reported by Indiana Capital Chronicle. “We never want to be the reason to hold up a casino from opening. Things are moving right along.”
However, the Gaming Commission finds itself under the shadow of two subpoenas from the U.S. Department of Justice, which compel recipients to give testimony or produce evidence, with penalties if the recipients fail to comply. Reske emphasized their cooperation with the Justice Department, expressing support for their efforts to combat public corruption.
The Indiana gambling industry has grappled with its share of controversies. Recent scandals involving casino funds intertwined with political activities have unfolded, leading to legal proceedings against former lawmakers. One such instance involved Brent Waltz and John Keeler, both sentenced in 2022 in connection to a 2016 campaign finance scheme.
Additionally, former lawmaker Sean Eberhart pleaded guilty recently in a case involving legislation favoring Spectacle Entertainment’s casino projects in Terre Haute and Gary, in exchange for personal benefits.
The fallout from Eberhart’s case has led legislative leaders to halt gambling expansions for the foreseeable future, including the push to legalize internet gambling, a sought-after initiative within the industry.
While not actively preparing for imminent passage due to the public ban on gambling expansions, Reske highlighted the commission’s efforts to stay informed about potential legislative changes. “We’ll continue to develop expertise on this,” she stated, emphasizing the need for regulatory readiness in case such legislation passes.
