PENN Entertainment has started its $206 million expansion project for M Resort, situated just south of the Las Vegas Strip. The company held Monday a groundbreaking ceremony for the property’s second hotel tower, in a move set to nearly double the number of hotel rooms on the property.

Jay Snowden, CEO, and President of PENN Entertainment, said: “This new addition will benefit from the strong demand of the Henderson locals market while providing much-needed additional room capacity for group business that is drawn to our market-leading resort and amenities, including our highly successful partnership with the Las Vegas Raiders.”

M Resort is a Forbes Four-Star resort situated on over 90 acres at the southeast corner of St. Rose Parkway and Las Vegas Boulevard. The project is expected to bolster the property’s accommodation capacity significantly. The addition of 384 rooms to the existing property will bring the total room count to 774, accompanied by meeting spaces, updated amenities, and undisclosed local partnerships to be unveiled later.

The new tower will be just southeast of and attached to the existing tower, reports Las Vegas Review-Journal. In addition to being connected to the current structure that opened in 2009, the buildings also will be attached underground so that new convention facilities under the resort will be continuous.

Hussain Mahrous, Vice President & General Manager of M Resort, said: “We look forward to hiring new team members and expanding the wonderful offerings that make M Resort a premier destination for visitors and convention attendees from across the country.”

Mahrous told Review-Journal he expects construction will begin on the site within 60 days and the tower would be completed and ready to open in 18 months. He also said M frequently nears capacity on busy weekends in Las Vegas and having the additional capacity would make the resort even more vibrant when the new tower opens. None of the existing M public areas will be affected by construction.

This expansion aligns with PENN Entertainment’s larger company-wide expansion plan unveiled last year, involving four new growth projects, including the introduction of new land-based casinos in Aurora and Joliet, Illinois, and a new hotel in Columbus, Ohio.

The funding for the Aurora project, amounting to $50 million, will be provided by the City of Aurora, while Gaming and Leisure Properties has committed up to $575 million towards the $850 million budget for all four growth projects.

PENN broke ground on its Joliet casino relocation this week.
